Wire rope tends to fray easily at the ends making it difficult to connect to equipment. Wire rope fittings or wire rope terminations are used to secure the ends of wire rope and fraying. There are many different types and sizes of wire rope fittings. The most common and useful type of end fitting for a wire rope is to turn the end back to form a loop. The loose end is then fixed back on the wire rope. Stainless steel wire rope fittings are used in high corrosive environments such as marine applications.
